Towers of strength

Starting with a slab, two cylinders of white clay have been coated with black engobe. Once dry, sections of the engobe is scratched off to reveal the lighter clay beneath. This process, which has been used for plaster decoration in buildings and in ceramics or millennia, is called sgraffito. Spending some of the time sitting outside in the early spring sunshine, it is a very satisfying process.
