Leaving a mark

Chris is someone I met in the studio I used to attend. He made some quite lovely ceramic pieces and brought more in from his studio at home for glazing and firing. Once done, he mentioned what a shame it was that a thumb print had been left on one piece. I disagree. It is so human to leave a piece of yourself in what has been created. Just like the 2000 year-old Roman cat's pawprints fired into a clay tile, to see a evidence of a snapshot in time is so pleasing. Therefore the latest bowl has been made bearing this in mind.

Throwing a bowl in basic buff earthenware, fired with bronze glaze and black detail, the bowl was picked up and dipped using all my right hand, thumb on the inside. The result is a ghosting of the fingerprints, in reference to those ancient creatures and people who made a mark of their own.
