Test pots for new glazes

Made to test out the new glazes, these pots made using white earthenware, are glazed with FG1056, Blue Crackle; FE5205, Speckled Green and FE5251, MarsMoons.

The blue crackle did as expected. Despite three layers, the crackle did not happen but it is clear the glaze has thickened at the base and run in a couple of areas. the green speckle is probably my favourite. I love the colour but also the oxide random dots. MarsMoons was fired on a flat surface so the run rate is no known but the colour and speckling is lovely.

The blue crackle did not really crackle at all, even after having three coats applied, but my main concern is running in the kiln and finding all stuck to the shelf. This rather thickly-applied glaze does show some signs of running a little, but the crackle effect has not worked. It makes me think that to achieve a crackle on a vertical surface may well mean a river of glaze left to wreak havoc on a kiln.

I do enjoy the green speckle which doesn't seem to have such a fluid firing. The glyphs were added using ceramic pencil and ceramic crayon. Both work well for me but both perform differently.

These are 'TerraColor' glazes, bought from Bath Potters' Supplies on the outskirts of Radstock, but they are also available to order online. Both are earthenware glazes.
