Smooth white clay, earthenware, with copper oxide and embossed detail.
All my ceramics are hand-made meaning I do not use molds, even rolling out sections by hand as if rolling pastry. It is amazing how differently the clay feels according to type; how it rolls, joins and generally behaves. This white clay is very easy to manipulate, a quality which makes it a little less robust than the professional black clay which is another favourite.
The top section of this is glazed with white matt but the bottom section has been left untouched which, for me, makes for pleasing handling. The glazed section has been left deliberately to 'crawl', the resulting texture alluding to rusting metal and its colonisation by sea creatures.
