As ever, the year starts with a peaceful lull as people settle back into their routines. It takes a while.
As most, I usually find this time of year a kind of hiatus and so sketch by way of getting back to where I was before.
The favourite tool for this is often fuelled by the presents I receive which almost always contain a selection of sketchbooks. It could be said it is something of a tradition. That and the beautiful British-made Unison pastels. Their rich soft colours keep their integrity, which little muddying up of colour and the thickness allows for bold coverage. Perfect for the job.
My first sketch is of the late rising sun along the lane by the woodland. This dip in the landscape is captivating.
The image above shows grass touched by frost. The sharp incline into the distance takes a footpath along the river towards Tellisford village.
The sun stays low at this time of year which makes for a pleasing slant to the light. All is lit in a theatrical fashion and makes the world look quite different to the harsh overhead light of summer. Once the frosts melt away all is golden. It is truly a precious time.
